About Me:

Using several of the most populated social media sites, including Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Twitter, the Great Social Media Race will track the amount of money raised from visitors to each social media site. Aside from being the central point of the Great Social Media Race, this blog will also be gauged as a fundraising tool. The Great Social Media Race is an important experiment in determining the effectiveness of social media, but it also helps a wonderful cause. Tom Bell, who aside from being Jennifer’s father, served in Vietnam, served more than 20 years with the Virginia National Guard, and worked 25 years as a detective on the Arlington County Police Force. He lost his battle with leukemia on April 25, 2006. Team Tom, having been selected to participate in the LLS’ annual Man/Woman campaign against 19 other individuals in the Washington, D.C. metro area, is competing from April 1st – June 13th to raise as much money as they can for the LLS. The person who raises the most wins the title of Man & Woman of the year.

Great Social Media Race Recap

Brought to you by the Great Race Refs

Thanks to everyone who has joined us over the past eight weeks to support Jennifer Keating in her quest to become the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. June 13 marked the conclusion of the Great Social Media Race and we can officially declare LinkedIn as the winner.

Over the past eight weeks, LinkedIn never yielded the lead, securing $4,466.70 from just 55 team members - 48 percent of the $9,371 raised by the Great Social Media Race. Facebook came in a close second with $3,660 raised through the help of 333 friends and the Team Tom blog took third place with $1,240.

As a part of Team Tom, however, the Great Social Media Race remained just a fraction of the total contribution. Over ten weeks, Jennifer and the rest of Team Tom raised $85,441 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and all 20 Man/Woman of the Year candidates combined to raise $890,000 for blood cancer research, support, and education. Congratulations Jennifer - Congratulations all.

Again, thank you all for your continued support, time, and donations. Congratulations Team Tom! Please visit

Week Eight Recap

Brought to you by the Great Race Refs

As we are only days away from the end of the Great Social Media Race, we thought it would be nice to remind everyone just what we are racing for.

The Great Social Media Race was designed to help Jennifer Keating in her quest to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man/Woman of the Year Campaign. For those of you who don’t know, Jennifer’s father lost his battle with leukemia on April 25, 2006. After he passed away, Jennifer made a decision to do everything in her power to help end the terrible disease and prevent anyone else from losing a loved one.

Through her continued work with LLS, Jennifer has helped to fund the work of hundreds of the world’s brightest researchers in their search for improved treatment and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Because of LLS supporters like Jennifer (and you!), the survival rate for patients with leukemia has more than tripled in the past 46 years. You too can help make a difference by supporting the Great Social Media Race over the next few days by helping us reach our goal of $10,000. Tell your friends about Jennifer’s mission to prevent others from losing a loved one to cancer, and help her meet her goal through a donation as little as $5.

In this week alone, Team Tom and the Great Social Media Race raised almost $2,000 for the LLS! Right now LinkedIn is holding on tight to their solid lead with $4,446. Facebook’s large group of 333 Friends is starting to catch up with more than $700 raised this week. Can the large Facebook following help us earn $3,000 more so we can reach our goal?

We only have 4 days left to help Jennifer’s mission. Can we make it to $10,000? If you haven’t done so already, please consider donating $5. It may seem small, but it truly will help make a difference. To those who have donated – we can’t thank you enough! Please share Jennifer’s story and help take us to the top.

We are almost to the finish line. Become part of Team Tom - make your donations by 5:00 p.m. Saturday, June 13.

Want to turn $25 into $50?

How often do you get to double your money with the click of a button? Rarely, if at all…

Now is your opportunity to do so. As we grind out the last week of the Great Social Media Race, Team Tom is offering to match any donation that comes in via Facebook through Friday, June 5 up to a total of $400. Your $5 donation could turn to $10 in an instant – all helping the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fund blood cancer research.

Why are we asking you for help? Jennifer Keating is still in the running to be crowned the winner of LLS’ Man/Woman of the Year campaign. In honor of her father, Tom Bell, who passed away from Leukemia, Jennifer was selected to participate in the LLS’ annual Man/Woman campaign to compete against 19 other individuals in the Washington, D.C. metro area to raise as much money as possible for the LLS.

Help take Jennifer and Team Tom to the top. Donate what you can, be part of a winning team, and help reduce the statistic that a child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma every 10 minutes, representing six people every hour or 145 deaths every day.

We have exactly 10 days left before we tally the results of the Great Social Media Race and Facebook is still lagging behind. To date, the Great Social Media Race has raised $4,826.70 in support of Jennifer’s campaign – only $365 donated through Facebook. Our group continues to grow every day and we still have a chance to take the lead. Donate $5 by Friday and have it instantly doubled. Visit our secure link today:

Week Seven Recap

Brought to you by the Great Race Refs

Team Tom is focused on the finish line and it is time to kick the Great Social Media Race into high gear. With June 13th right around the corner, the social media networks all have their eye on the prize. Can LinkedIn maintain that strong lead through to the end? Or will Twitter come from behind? With just under two weeks left – a lot can happen and YOU can make a difference. Tell your friends about Jennifer’s mission to prevent others from losing a loved one to cancer, and help her meet her goal through a donation as little as $5.

This week, LinkedIn added a $200 cushion to an already comfortable lead. But with only 52 members, will LinkedIn be able to hold on until the end? Facebook’s donations continue to trickle in slowly, but perhaps the 334 group members will provide a last minute push to pass LinkedIn. The Blog continues to generate interest, Twitter continues to attract followers at a consistent rate, and MySpace is holding on tight to the… losing spot. What will happen over these next 13 days?

If you’ve already donated, remember there are other ways to get involved. Please take a few minutes to enter our Twitter contest. Begin following our Twitter group, @teamtomlls, and ‘tweet’ (you may also send our group a direct message to ensure that we don’t miss your story) the most inspirational 140 character to lift the spirits of so many cancer patients. We will post of all the tweets throughout Team Tom’s social media networks and have our followers vote on their favorite. The winner will be contacted to have their story featured on our blog, www.teamtom.org, and we will make a $100 donation to Team Tom’s LLS fund in their name.

Finally, keep spreading the good word. Pass the links along to your friends and feel free to share your personal stories for posting on our blog (send information to share@teamtom.org). Thanks everyone for your continued support.

Week Six Recap

Brought to you by the Great Race Refs

And down the stretch we come … just two weeks and counting until the conclusion of the Great Social Media Race. As we complete the final stretch of the Great Social Media Race, we must continue to focus on raising money for Jennifer and Team Tom. Keep up the momentum up, the adrenaline pumping, and recruit your friends to join our networks.

Just when you think it may be surpassed, the group on LinkedIn surged ahead again, adding almost $700 between the end of Week 5 and the end of Week 6, standing currently on $3,026.70 dollars raised. We joke about the race being just that, but serious thanks are in order to those who have donated through LinkedIn! Way to go. Additionally, Team Tom’s social media network continues to expand as Twitter and Facebook add friends/followers at a consistent rate – now standing at a combined amount of 500 people.
